Are you getting the best results possible from your international colleagues and customers?
Take the IRC and get your best-ever results
If you want to do business internationally, there are certain things you need to know. But how do you know what these things are? You're willing to study and learn - but where do you begin?
The Intercultural Readiness Check is an assessment tool that tells you exactly where you need to focus in order to excel in any situation involving people from different countries and cultures. You will learn how to develop the exact skills necessary to close confusing business deals, handle impending difficulties and be successful the first time round.
The IRC is accessible online in eight languages (English, German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese) and takes under an hour of your time to complete. This assessment measures your readiness to work with international clients and teams along four dimensions:
- Intercultural Sensitivity:
- How actively aware are you of other people's cultural backgrounds, needs and perspectives?
- How much do you notice when interacting with people from other cultures?
- Intercultural Communication:
- How mindful are you when communicating with others?
- How effectively do you adjust your style to meet their expectations and needs?
- Building Commitment:
- How much effort do you put into developing relationships and diverse networks?
- How creative are you at developing solutions that satisfy the interests of different stakeholders?
- Managing Uncertainty:
- How easily do you take on the challenge of culturally diverse situations?
- How effectively are you able to use cultural diversity as a source of learning and innovation?
These four intercultural competences are what contribute to working more effectively across cultures. They were developed by leading European universities together with internationally renowned, cross-cultural psychologists. It was first launched in 1999 and since then, it has been revalidated and refined using the response of tens of thousands of registered users.
But what makes the IRC so unique compared to other intercultural business skill assessments, and why should you take it? The answer is that it goes beyond tips, tricks and theories that, in the end, make no difference to your business performance.
Most assessments measure natural personality traits, which help managers to categorize you into the "correct" group or team, regardless of your own interests. These personality traits are very difficult, if not impossible, to change. Moreover, if you are found to struggle with business across cultures (as most of us do) then you may be advised to research country-specific tips and tricks, outlined in many culture guides. The professional world is not a foreign exchange holiday, and so this often leads to awkward situations, such as the one in the picture above where the Westerner bows while the Asian holds out his hand. While this is seemingly minor, it is often one of those things that, unless sensitively handled, can destroy business deals and, of course, business-related problems are typically much worse.
The IRC is unique in that the four competences it tests are skill-sets everyone can develop and improve upon. It is a basis for measurably improving your personal skills and, through that, your hard business results. Through coaching and self-study, you will be able to transform your capabilities along the lines of the four competences measured by the IRC.
You can read more about the real-world application of the IRC and the four competences in the book 'Intercultural Readiness: Four Competences for Working Across Cultures,' which you can purchase on Amazon.
How reliable is the IRC?
We use the IRC with our clients not only because it provides such clear bottom-line business results, but also because, of all intercultural assessment tools out there, it offers an ideal combination of practicality, ease of use and reliability. More than 50,000 respondents from all over the world have completed the IRC over the past 20 years, making the IRC database one of the largest sources of information on intercultural competence world-wide. The database has been analyzed in four major studies to monitor its quality and to gain new insights into intercultural competence development. Reliability checks involving a massive re-analysis of answers from more than 13,000 respondents were used to develop the current version, the IRC 2.0.
In taking the IRC, you can rest assured that you are being assessed in the most practical and results-oriented manner possible. As an independent organization, we are confident that, provided you put in the work, the IRC is the best tool to optimise your professional development as someone who does business internationally.
The IRC in practice
We at BRIL.Solutions have used the IRC as a benchmarking tool in the training and development programs we have designed and delivered for major clients such as Atradius, DSM and G4S. The IRC provided a clear and concise roadmap for course participants to follow in their personal and professional development.
Because we know that the IRC is such an effective and useful professional tool, we want it to be available to everyone who desires to do international business. Whether you have a small business or are employed by a large company, we want to make it as easy as possible for you to take the assessment and work on getting ahead when it comes to working with international teams and clients. We've seen how effective the IRC is in practice, and we want you to experience that for yourself.
What you get
The IRC helps you better understand how you currently approach intercultural interactions in a professional environment. It tells you what you do well, what you find challenging, and how you can find the support necessary to develop a high degree of intercultural competence. This is done in two ways:
1. Written personal feedback with detailed suggestions for development.
This is provided with both IRC packages. You will receive detailed written feedback regardless of whether or not you choose to have additional coaching.
Precise Written Feedback
The IRC feedback is helpful, relevant and offers straightforward solutions for personal development. Use the IRC feedback to determine your next steps for interacting more effectively with clients and colleagues from other cultures.
With more than 45,000 respondents from 14 industries and 130+ countries, the IRC database allows you to benchmark yourself, your team and your organization by learning about levels of intercultural competence within your industry and across industries.
The IRC feedback will help you to better understand how you currently approach intercultural interactions. What do you do well, what do you find difficult, and how can you further develop your intercultural competences?
Where should you start? To help you decide, the IRC feedback highlights two specific areas, or facets, for each intercultural competence. For example, in order to enhance your Intercultural Sensitivity, should you focus primarily on becoming more aware of other cultures, or on paying more attention to verbal and nonverbal signals? You can decide on your own path of improvement by taking into account how your approach compared to that of thousands of people worldwide.
2. Live 1-hour Coaching Session to help you implement your points for improvement
Getting detailed feedback is good, but sometimes it's difficult to know exactly how to apply what you've learned. You really want to make necessary changes to be more effective, but where do you even begin?
To help you get started, we have included a one-hour coaching session with one of our IRC packages.
Our coaches will help you to interpret the written results of the IRC in depth, analyze your work situation, and help you to make concrete use of your IRC results. IRC coaches are thoroughly acquainted with the four competences and also have deep international experience. With their guidance, you will discover new and creative ways to work in the world of global business.
Although the IRC coaching package includes only a one-hour session, you can request longer sessions, or a series of sessions, by contacting us directly.
Why Choose Additional Coaching?
After having a single hour-long consultation with a professional IRC business coach, you will come away with plenty of ideas that you will need to develop and implement on your own. While this is incredibly valuable, the return on investment of regular consultations with coaches who are highly experienced in international business is priceless. Longer-term coaching goes beyond the simple creation of business strategies. Regular business coaching ensures that you know your strategies will take you in the right direction, for the best results possible. Your coach will support you in having the most up-to-date knowledge on international business, and in ensuring that you are applying your knowledge to your business situation in the way that is best for you.
