When doing international business, there are certain things you must know. The basic business information is not enough; you also need to develop cultural awareness.

Intercultural Readiness Check

How ready are you for working with people from different countries and cultures?

If you want to do business internationally, there are things you need to know in order to have a good chance of success. But how do you know what these are? How do you develop yourself into a competent international businessperson? You're willing to study and learn - but where to begin?

The Intercultural Readiness Check is an assessment tool that will tell you exactly what you need to focus on in order to become competent in any situation where you're dealing with people from different countries and cultures. You will learn exactly what skills are necessary to be successful.

The Intercultural Readiness Check (IRC) is the most validated, test existing for assessing your professional intercultural competence. .

The IRC measures your readiness along four dimensions:

  • Intercultural Sensitivity: The degree to which you take an active interest in others, their cultural background, needs and perspectives.
  • Building Commitment: The degree to which you actively influence your social environment, and are concerned with integrating different people and personalities.
  • Intercultural Communication: The degree to which you actively monitor your own communicative behaviors.
  • Managing Uncertainty: The degree to which you are able to manage the greater uncertainty of intercultural situations.

This linked series of four intercultural competences contribute to working more effectively across cultures. They were developed by leading European universities together with internationally renowned, cross-cultural psychologists, primarily from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. The first version of the IRC was launched in 1999 by Dr. Ursula Brinkmann and Oscar van Weerdenburg of the Intercultural Business Improvement organization. In the intervening 20 years, the competences have been reexamined, revalidated and refined using the responses of tens of thousands of registered users.

How reliable is the IRC?

Of all intercultural assessment tools, the IRC offers an ideal combination of being practical, uncomplicated, reliable and solid. More than 50,000 respondents from all over the world have completed the IRC over the past 20 years, making the IRC database one of the largest sources of information on intercultural competences world-wide. The database has been analyzed in four major studies to monitor the quality of the instrument and to gain new insights into intercultural competence development. Reliability checks involving a massive re-analysis of answers from more than 13,000 respondents were used to develop the current version, the IRC 2.0.
